WELCOME TO FENCING CLASS!

This is where you start. Join in a beginning fencing class to learn the basics then it is on to advanced class and open bouting with your new friends. A lifetime of fun and fencing is waiting for you.

We will be available for questions before (and during class for parents) the first class for your questions, but here is a start…

So what are we going to be doing in class?

For the first class we are going to start by going over safety and club rules and some history of fencing, and a demonstration of the equipment.  Every class students will warm up with fun games that prepare them for the agility, speed and movements of fencing.  Each class will introduce new skills and new challenges, while reviewing the basics as we go. We will transition from footwork and stance to bouting over the course of the class.  Join in the fun and you’ll fall in love with fencing, too.

What is needed for class?

We are an active class; fencers should wear comfortable clothing and sport shoes with socks.  No flip-flops, crocs, sandals etc will be allowed.  Long hair should be tied back. Modest athletic wear is requested.

Knickers or athletic pants will need to be worn during classes where you will be using a weapon. Not needed the first week.

Water bottle. Water bottle water bottle

Bring a refillable water bottle – you will be sweating. You can refill it throughout the session as needed.

All fencing equipment will be provided for the beginning and homeschool classes.

After the first class students MUST HAVE A USFA MEMBERSHIP.. go to the United States Fencing Association website sign up before the second class. https://www.usafencing.org/membership

If you need any help just ask us.  There are a few levels but you will only need the “Access” level to fence and attend local tournaments.  It is $29 per year.

 USFA Membership Requirements

Fencing clubs require mandatory USFA membership for all fencers. The main reason is that the clubs purchase group insurance from USFA and USFA requires all fencers, even beginners, to have at least an Access membership for any fencing-related classes and activities. For individuals, USFA membership includes secondary insurance for the fencer.

Membership is yearly, with the USFA year going from August 1 to July 31.

Current prices, (as of Aug 1 2023):

                ACCESS: Minimum requirement $29/year

Note that it’s very important to specify the correct division when registering with USFA.

We are in the GATEWAY Florida Division.

Club name is INVICTUS FENCING CLUB

How long does it take to learn to fence?

The answer is a lifetime.  Just like other sports – the more you do it the more you learn – about fencing and about yourself.  When beginning class is over your athlete will have the same basics that everyone at all levels practices!  Next, move on to advanced fencing and learn more advanced skills and start bouting.  The sky is the limit. “Have FUN and fence!”
